One of my favorite things to forage in the springtime in Michigan is wild onion. They are delicious and they are everywhere! When we are out hunting for morels or just walking our property, I can’t help but gather a few to accompany our next meal.
You can use wild onion for all sorts of things, but my favorite thing to make with them is wild onion dip. This dip is addictive! You can use it for dipping your favorite chips or veggies, mixing into scrambled eggs, or topping a burger.
Identifying Wild Onion
Wild onion is fairly easy to spot. The plant grows readily in well-draining soils near forests and in lawns throughout North America. It has tall, grass-like leaves that sprout from a white, underground bulb. The giveaway in identifying this plant is its odor, wild onion has a pungent garlicky smell. See a picture of wild onion in its natural habitat below.
When foraging, it is always best to be safe than sorry. I recommend using a plant identification book, smart phone app, or experienced forager to help you get started.

Harvesting Wild Onion
Both the bulb and leaves of the wild onion are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked. When harvesting wild onion, I collect the whole plant and carry it in a foraging basket to my house where I clean and prepare it for eating.
You can harvest wild onion by hand by gently pulling on the stems to expose the bulb or dig up the bulb with a garden trowel.
Materials Needed for Making Wild Onion Dip
After washing the wild onion to remove any dirt, I peel the outer layer off and chop the bulb and most of the stem. Then, I toast the onions in the oven on a baking sheet at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Toasting the onions gives them a little bit of texture and makes them more sweet and savory, in my opinion!
