Move over sourdough, there’s a new bread in town!

I was into sourdough for a while, but discarding and feeding quickly became a chore. Since ditching my starter, I have gone back to making the first bread I ever made, beer bread! It is so easy and turns out great every time.

Advantages of Beer Bread

One of the best things about beer bread is that it is quick and easy. Pressed for time? No problem. You can make this bread on the fly; no planning or preparation is required. You don’t have to wait for it to rise or even do any kneading. Just preheat your oven, mix the ingredients, and bake.

Beer bread is also incredibly simple to make. All you need are a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand. This homemade bread doesn’t require yeast or special flour, just all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, honey, butter, and beer.

Beer bread is delicious and extremely versatile. The basic recipe makes bread with a buttery crust and just a hint of sweetness. You can use it to make sandwiches or accompany soup or stew. If you use light beer, bread is all you will taste (just ask your kids). If you want more of the beer flavor, use a stout or IPA. You can also spice up your beer bread by adding ingredients like cheese or herbs!

What Kind of Beer Should I Use?

That is completely up to you.

You can use any kind of beer to make beer bread. I usually use Miller Lite or Bud Light for a mild flavored bread, but anything from your fridge will work. You can even substitute the beer for pop. Sprite and Cream Soda make delicious bread as well!

Equipment Needed for Making Honey Beer Bread

You will need a large bowl and wooden spoon to mix the ingredients. Use a basting brush to coat the loaf pan with melted butter and an oven to bake your bread.

Ingredients for Making Honey Beer Bread

Make this beer bread with regular all-purpose flour (not self-rising). The carbonation in the beer along with baking powder will allow it to rise properly. I use raw honey in my recipe, but any honey will work. Use a whole can or bottle of the beer of your choice, room temperature is best. Half of the butter (3 tablespoons) will go into the bread pan; the other half will be poured over the dough before baking. I do use salted butter.

  3. Add ¼ cup raw honey and 12 ounces of beer to the dry ingredients in the bowl. Stir to combine with a wooden spoon. The dough will be thick and sticky.
