As a beekeeper, I get my share of bee stings. Especially in the fall, I expect to get a welt or two when I feed or install mouse guards.
I don’t blame the bees when I get stung. I know the guards are just doing their job, vehemently protecting the resources they so diligently worked to secure for the winter.
Bee stings hurt though, and itch. Let’s look at what happens in your body when you get stung by a bee.
What Happens When You Get Stung by a Bee
Some people are allergic to bees and can go into anaphylactic shock when stung. Immediate emergency intervention is required for the difficulty breathing and rapid heart rate that ensues.
Thankfully, most of us are not allergic to bee venom and instead only experience local skin reactions when stung. At the site of a bee sting, venom is released into the blood stream triggering the inflammatory response. The result is redness, swelling, pain, and itching that can last several days.
Bee Sting Remedies
There are lots of things that can help ease the symptoms associated with a bee sting. Ice can help with pain and swelling. Anti-inflammatories (like Motrin) alleviate inflammation and pain, while antihistamines (like Benadryl) target the itching and swelling.
Calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream can be applied to the site of the sting or you can try a natural remedy. I’ve found that putting raw honey on my bee stings actually helps! For more amazing uses of honey, click here to read my other blog post.
The natural remedy that I want to share with you today is the essential oil blend that I make and put in a roller bottle and apply to my bee stings. It works wonders and really helps with the pain and itching!
