I’ve been wearing makeup less these days, but a hint of blush is nice to add some color to my complexion, especially during the winter months!

Michigan winters can be hard on your skin. I’ve found what makes my face look and feel its best is a homemade tallow and castor oil balm. It is deeply moisturizing and doesn’t make me break out. You can learn more about how I make my whipped tallow balm here.

I decided to try and create a cream blush by adding mica powder and iron oxide to my tallow-based facial moisturizer. I love how it turned out! It is nourishing and provides blendable, subtle color. Plus, you can use it on your lips too!

Advantages of Homemade Makeup

I’m a do-it-yourself kind of gal. I make my own soap, lip balm, and moisturizers for face and body. One of the things I like about making my own skincare products is knowing exactly what is in them. I can formulate my recipes without parabens, phthalates, and chemicals commonly found in cosmetics and personal care products. Making my own makeup gives me the freedom to choose ingredients that I feel good about.

Another advantage of making your own makeup is being able to create a custom shade that you love. Since you are in control, you can experiment and find a combination that matches your skin tone, or your mood!

Materials Needed for Making Tallow-Based Cream Blush

Use a kitchen scale to weigh your tallow moisturizer and a bowl and small rubber spatula for incorporating the powdered pigments. Store your cream blush in a small container with a lid, I reused a 2-ounce glass jar that I had on hand.

To make a tallow-based cream blush, just add the pigments of your choice to your facial moisturizer. I used a mini scoop to add a little bit of iron oxide as well as mica powder in red, rose pearl, and ultra sparkle copper. I source all my pigments from Brambleberry.com because they have rigorous quality standards and classify these ingredients as cosmetic-grade, non-toxic as well as lip and eye safe.
