I don’t wear makeup as often as I used to, but when I wear mascara, I like to take it off before I wash my face at night. I previously used a store-bought product that worked really well, but contained a lot of chemical ingredients that I didn’t recognize and can’t pronounce!

I started making my own skincare products (soap, tallow balm, lip balm, body spray) a few years ago in an effort to consume less and live more naturally. So, when I recently ran out of makeup remover, I thought I would try making my own!

Here is the recipe that I came up with. It quickly and gently removes regular makeup and will remove waterproof mascara with a little extra rubbing.

Materials Needed for Making DIY Makeup Remover

You will need some kind of container to store your makeup remover in. I used a square 6-ounce plastic bottle, but glass would work too. Use a pipette for measuring out drops of essential oil and a tablespoon for the rest of the ingredients.

Jojoba oil and aloe vera are both soothing to the skin and help soften and remove makeup. Witch hazel is a gentle cleansing agent.

The distilled water dilutes the mixture so that it is easy to apply and use. You will want to use distilled water so that you are sure there aren’t microbes or minerals found in tap water that will affect the longevity or performance of your makeup remover.

A drop or two of essential oil adds some scent and depending on what you add, possibly additional benefits. I have used frankincense and lavender essential oils in my makeup remover.

Directions for Making DIY Makeup Remover

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil to the empty 6-ounce container
  2. Add 2 tablespoons each of aloe vera liquid and witch hazel to the container
  3. With a pipette, add 2 drops of essential oil to the container
  4. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with distilled water, I added about 3.5 ounces of water to my 6-ounce bottle
  5. Store out of direct sunlight
  6. Use your DIY makeup remover!
