I plan my kidding season to start at the beginning of February. I live in Michigan and it is an unpredictable, but usually extremely cold month. If it didn’t line up so well with my July county fair, I definitely would choose another time to bring baby goats into the world.
One of the things I do to prepare for the frigid temps is have a stash of baby goat coats on hand. Fortunately, I have some really talented family and friends that have made me some adorable fleece coats for my new babies. These work so well and I love them. They are warm, easy to wash, and did I mention cute?!
The problem is that I don’t have enough of them anymore as we have significantly added to our herd in recent years.
Since I don’t have the knack for sewing, or a sewing machine, when I’m in a pinch I make a few baby goat coats from old sweatpants and sweatshirts. Let me show you how- it’ super easy!
Materials for Making a No-sew Baby Goat Coat
All you need for this project is a pair of scissors and an old sweatshirt (sweatpants with cuffs will work too). Search your closet for items that don’t fit or don’t get worn to repurpose into baby goat coats or go to your local secondhand store!
Directions for Making a No-sew Baby Goat Coat
- Lay the sweatshirt or sweatpants out flat and estimate the size coat you want to make. The cuff area is going to be the head hole for the baby goat coat. You can use a pen to outline where you are going to cut if you want to.
- With your scissors, cut the sweatshirt or sweatpants on an angle. You want the longer portion to be the back of the coat and the shorter portion to go under the goat’s belly. If you are making the coat for a baby boy goat make sure it is short enough that it doesn’t get in the way and get urinated on.
- Now fold the coat along the belly side and estimate where you want the foot holes to be. Remember that the foot holes are going to be on the half of the coat that has the head hole.
- Cut out the foot hole (a small circle) with the coat still folded. When you unfold it, you will have two identical holes for the front legs.
- Try the coat on your baby goat and make any adjustments to size.
- Enjoy the peace of mind that comes with keeping your newborns extra warm and insulated on a winter’s day
