If you are thinking about trying out speed events for the first time, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. Before you hit the road with your truck and trailer, consider these six tips. Barrel racing isn’t just about winning, its about having a great experience for you and your horse.

So, you’ve signed up for your first speed show? I bet you’re SO excited. I was too. I couldn’t wait to go racing around those barrels on my best friend. But first, here are some things to remember.
1. Listen to your horse
You should not ride if your horse is not feeling well. Before you go to any show, and when you get there, you need to make sure your horse is happy and healthy. Also, you need to listen to what kind of mood your horse is in. Often, when horses go to a new place, they get excited or nervous. You need to make sure he gets his wiggles out in the warm up arena, and that he feels safe. You want your horse to have a good time, as well as you.
2. Try to beat your own time, not other people’s
For your first race, you should try to set a goal time for yourself. Don’t pay attention to other rider’s times. For every time you go to a speed show, try to beat your previous time. You should be competing against yourself to get better.
3. It’s about having a good pattern, not a good time
Do not hot-rod your horse around the barrels! When you try to go full speed and do super tight turns, barrels get knocked. A perfect pattern with an OK time is better than a really fast time with all three barrels on the ground. Focus on making good turns and not speed.
4. Have fun!
Competition should be fun, not stressful. I have met so many new friends through going to shows. Talk to and make friends with your competitors. It will make it so much more fun. Even try something new like pole bending or flags. Shows are a great time, make the most of it!
5. Be prepared
You don’t want to show up and notice that you forgot your horse’s water bucket or your entry fee. I highly suggest making a list of all of the things you will need, and making sure that everything on the list is loaded before you leave. It will be a lot easier for you if you have all of your things with you.
6. Get there early
Make sure you are on time. You need to have time to settle your horse in and warm him up before the show. You will especially need this time if your horse gets scared or overly excited. This will save you!
I hope you have an amazing first show and enjoy your time with your horse. Barrel racing is an awesome sport and I hope you love it as much as I do.
