5 Reasons Geldings Are Better Than Mares

Horses are great, but not all horses are created equal. Here are the reasons we prefer to keep geldings on our farm, instead of mares. We might be a little biased, but let me tell you why that is.

So, you want a horse, huh? And you can’t decide whether to get a gelding or mare? Well, I have the answer. GET A GELDING!!!

1. Geldings have better attitudes

Mares are sassy. Mares tend to make a mean face whenever you touch them. Geldings won’t do this!

Mares also like to pretend like they are going to bite you. Geldings also won’t do this! And because of a mare’s attitude, they are harder to get to do what you want. They often talk back to you when you ask them to do something. You won’t have this problem with a gelding.

2. Geldings don’t mind change

Geldings are calm. Geldings have a very good attitude about everything, they do everything with ease. If you ask a gelding to do something new you usually get the result you want, and a happy horse.

3. Geldings are sweet

Geldings are very affectionate. Mares don’t necessarily like their faces touched. A gelding will be licking your hands even after the treat is gone, and always lowering his head for a good scratch. He will always want to stand right next to you, and follow you around like a huge puppy. They are so fun!

4. Geldings go with the flow

Geldings don’t care what you do to them. “You want to give me a bath? OK!” “You want to braid my mane? OK!” “You want me to walk through this gate? OK!” They will do whatever you ask them without a fuss. Mares on the other hand… If they have had enough, they will tell you so!

5. Geldings are good at making friends

Geldings get along with other horses, and even other animals. As I’ve said before, geldings are very friendly. Well, not just to people, they can be friends with anyone!

I hope I’ve convinced you and helped you with your decision. Now, go have fun with your boy! And while you’ll never find a horse as good as Ranger, I’m positive you will find the gelding for you!
